About NEED2
Our History
NEED2 Suicide Prevention, Education & Support has been creating safer, more connected communities since 1971.
The organization began as a grassroots initiative in Greater Victoria, founded on a simple but powerful belief: when someone is struggling, we must be willing to listen, respond and do what needs to be done. For more than five decades, this commitment has guided NEED2’s work and its response to the changing needs of the community.
Over the years, NEED2’s services have evolved considerably. The organization has provided crisis support, youth-focused online services, suicide-prevention education, community training and support for people affected by suicide loss. While the ways we serve have changed, our purpose has remained consistent: to prevent deaths by suicide, reduce stigma and ensure that people do not have to face their struggles alone.
Today, NEED2 focuses on providing suicide-prevention education for youth and adults, along with online peer support for adults bereaved by suicide. Through school-based programs, community and workplace training, and compassionate suicide-loss support, NEED2 continues its longstanding role in helping to create suicide-safer communities throughout Greater Victoria, across Vancouver Island, and British Columbia.
Who We Serve
NEED2 serves children, youth and adults through programs designed for different ages, roles and levels of experience.
Our school-based education programs begin in Grade 4 and continue through Grade 12. These programs help students develop mindfulness and self-care skills, better understand mental health and suicide, recognize when someone may be struggling, and learn how to reach out for support. NEED2 currently works with schools across Greater Victoria, including those within the Greater Victoria, Sooke and Saanich school districts, and is expanding its reach into the Cowichan Valley.
Our adult education programs are available to individuals, workplaces, community organizations and professionals who want to strengthen their understanding of suicide and their ability to respond. Community members can register for public workshops, while private SEA, safeTALK and ASIST workshops are available to organizations and groups throughout British Columbia. Training may be offered in person or online, depending on the program and the needs of the group.
NEED2 also facilitates an online Peer Support Group for adults across British Columbia who have experienced the death of someone by suicide. By offering this group online, we can provide connection and mutual support to people throughout the province, including those who may not have access to suicide-loss support in their own communities.
