About Manuel
Manuel was born in Guadalajara Mexico and lived in Mexico until he was 16. Coming to Canada in 2009 to Vancouver Island changed his life. He reunited with the love of his life (Hope), in 2014 and started building a life together. He initially took running as a means to “stay physically healthy”. However, throughout the years and throughout the encounters with nature, he started realizing that running is one of the truest and purest expressions of a human being. After running in nature he felt fulfilled, at peace, content with his life and ready to face the daily challenges society imposes on us all. Life started to become an adventure, full of curiosity, and exploration of what is possible as we live this human experience. He noticed that his mental health improved drastically after a run, and deteriorated when he didn’t prioritized moving his body. Running wasn’t just keeping him physically healthy, it also played a huge impact on his mental health, his energetic body, and even spiritual body at times. It regulated him in days/weeks where life just got hard.
Manuel lost a cousin to suicide, and he wishes he could have done more to prevent it, to intervene, and support when needed. He also realized mental illness and mental health struggle is more common than we think, yet they are extremely stigmatized in our society.
This adventure, expedition, quest of running the Pacific Marine Circle Route, all 250 km of it, is Manuel’s attempt to share the human expression of running, of moving your body like it was meant to move, and raise awareness for other human expressions such as feelings, emotions, and your daily mental health. He wishes to highlight the correlation between running and mental health, and the benefits of releasing all human expressions instead of suppressing them. The intention is to gather with family and friends every night of the 5 stages of the route, to share experiences together with the people we love, instead of doing it alone and burning out.
